UEFA has announced that the 2012-15 free-to-air media rights for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League in sub-Saharan Africa have been awarded to Startimes.
A statement posted in the European FA website reads: “UEFA today announced the award of the 2012-15 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League free-to-air media rights in sub-Saharan Africa (excluding the Republic of South Africa) to StarTimesâ€
According to the statement, Startimes will ensure the distribution of media rights to free-to-air broadcasters throughout the region.
The UEFA Champions League media rights consist of the Wednesday first match pick, including the UEFA Champions League final and the UEFA Super Cup, and one highlights programme per matchweek.
The UEFA Europa League media rights handed to Startimes comprise the first-choice game and one highlights programme every matchweek.
The announcement followed the recent award of pay rights for both UEFA club competitions in sub-Saharan Africa to SuperSport.
Speaking with Consumers’Advocate on the development, Startimes’ Publicity Manager, Celestine Umeibe, said the award was a testament of his company’s quest to satisfy the desires of its sports loving subscribers.
Celestine added that a separate channel in the Startimes bouquet will soon be opened to air the EUFA matches.
