Policemen at Adeniji Adele Police Division, Lagos Island, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, are still wondering why one of their colleagues, a corporal, simply identified as Shaba, shot and killed himself with his service rifle.
P.M.NEWS learnt that the late Shaba quietly went to the back of the police division at about 3.00 p.m. on Saturday and shot himself on the chest.
A source at the police station said the sound of the gun shot from the back of the building attracted his colleagues who rushed to the scene.
Efforts by the colleagues who had wanted to rush Corporal Shaba to a nearby hospital proved futile as he had died on the spot.
The reason corporal took his life could not be ascertained as no suicide note was found on him.
The incident reportedly left his colleagues in the police division in shock.
They described the deceased as a humble, loyal, respectful and easy going person.
When P.M.NEWS visited the police division to see the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, for comments on the incident, he was said to have gone to the Lagos State Police Command for a meeting.
A police source confirmed the incident and said the corpse of the deceased has been deposited in a hospital mortuary.
