Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has told his colleagues to stop running away from their constituents.

Ikuforiji gave this advice at a recent sitting of the House where he also lamented that lawmakers had stopped observing some rules of the House.

A rule of the House states that every lawmaker travelling should write to the Speaker, telling him where he is going and the reason for the travel, while such person is supposed to also state the address of the place he is going and how long he would stay.

But the Speaker informed the House that the lawmakers had not been observing the rule.

As a way to remind them, he instructed the Majority Leader of the House, Ajibayo Adeyeye, to read two letters sent in that regard by two lawmakers who were travelling for lesser Hajj.

However, this was criticised by some of the lawmakers who told the Speaker that the rule did not make provision for the public reading of the letters.

While Sanai Agunbiade looked at the legal aspect of the issue, Ipoola Omisore argued that it would make their constituents monitor their movements, especially as they were always disturbed for financial assistance.

But Ikuforiji reminded them that the lawmakers begged the constituents prior to their election and that they were not supposed to abandon them now that they have been elected.

He also told them that right from the day they were sworn in, everything about them became public knowledge, stressing that they should learn to accommodate such inconveniences that come with their positions.
