A house maid, Chioma Ndukwu, has been charged to Ejigbo Magistrate’s court in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, for allegedly stealing the gold jewellery of her employer, the late Adenike Omowumi.
The 24-year old Chioma was alleged to have entered her late madam’s bedroom while she was unconscious and took the expensive jewellery and fled to her sister’s house.
The incident happened at Governor’s Road, Ikotun, Lagos, where Chioma lived with the woman.
However, her elder sister, Peace, who knew what she did asked Chioma to return the item to the relations of the late woman.
Chioma refused and reportedly sold the jewellery at a give-away price.
Peace went and told the late madam’s relations what happened. And Chioma was arrested and charged to court.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the children of the late Omowumi engaged the services of Peace and paid her monthly to take care of the old woman who later fell seriously sick and died.
While she was in the throes of death, Chioma reportedly went into the madam’s room and carted away the items.
When the matter came up at the court, Chioma pleaded not guilty.
The presiding magistrate, Mrs. S. O. Solebo granted her bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties.
The matter has been adjourned till 6 October, 2011 for trial.
