About N12m ($80,000) has been earmarked as the total prize money for winners in the 11th Governorâ€™s Cup Lagos Championship which will hold from 14-30 October at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Court, Onikan
A breakdown of the prize money shows that the winner in the Womenâ€™s Singles of the ITF-approved tourney, sponsored by Etisalat and FCMB, will take home N7.5m ($50,000), while the menâ€™s winner will cart away N4.5m ($30,000).
Briefing the press yesterday in Lagos, the Chairman of the Local Organisng Committee, LOC, Chief Pius Akinyelure commended the two major sponsors and other co-sponsors for their support.
â€œThe Governorâ€™s Cup is the longest running ITF tournament in Nigeria. It gives out the highest prize money in the whole of Africa; parts of Europe, South America and the Oceanic for tourneys in this category. The achievement since inception has made it the pride of Nigeria and indeed the African continent,â€ he said.
The two major sponsors, Etisalat and FCMB reiterated their commitment to the sponsorship of the competition.
â€œWe are proud to associate with the LOC of this tournament,â€ said Mr. Enitan Demiloye, Director, Brand and Communications of Etisalat. â€œWe believe the relationship will help to develop the game and further strengthen our social responsibility to the Nigerian society,â€ he said.
