Mourners Besiege Ibru’s Home

As early as 8 o’clock this morning, Nigerians from all walks of life trooped to 17A Alexandra Road, Ikoyi, Lagos residence of the late Alex Ibru, publisher of The Guardian newspaper.

Among the early callers were Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba and his wife, Derin; retired General Alani Akinrinade, former Head of the Interim Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, the ACN Vice-Presidential candidate in the last general elections, Fola Adeola, renowned accountant, Akintola Williams and Bashorun J. K. Randle, a popular chartered accountant.

Two children of the deceased, Anita and Toke, were on hand to receive the visitors.

Wife of the deceased, Maiden Ibru was in the inner chamber of the residence with two policemen who restricted the movement of journalists and visitors to the inner chamber.

However, on arrival, a brother of the deceased, Goddie Ibru, led some important dignitaries into the inner chamber.

The family has opened two condolence registers at the home.

In his comment, Governor Fashola stated: “A tragic loss had befallen our nation. At a time of great need, men like Alex Ibru should not die. He represents the value of leadership and entrepreneurial spirit. His transition nevertheless became a reality. We must accept. In doing so, we take lessons from the way he lived life for his nation, his people and his God as a worthy example of what many of us seek to do. May his kind soul rest in peace and God continue to sustain his family, especially his wife and children.” In his comment, Mr. Akintola Williams described the late Alex Ibru as a perfect gentleman.

Retired General Alani Akinrinade stated: “Rest in peace, you have done so much for humanity. Farewell!”

Osoba in his reaction stated: “Alex, Alex your other name is fortitude. With fortitude, you confronted your assassins. With fortitude you faced the threat of death. With courage and fortitude, you bore the pains and agony of your last days.  “With fearlessness, we all around you, including my wife, Aderinsola and children, you left a lesson until your last breath. In courage, in adversity and will power, rest and rest for ever. May your soul rest in perfect peace.” John Odigie Oyegun, former Governor of Edo State and the proprietor of Silverbird television, Mr. Ben Murray-Bruce were also sighted at the residence.
