The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is to ensure that petrol stations in the state complied with the requirement that they provide public toilets and waste bins in their premises.

The Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ola Oresanya, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.

Oresanya said that petrol stations were also required to ensure that the general public was given access to the conveniences at all times, since their locations were public places.

He said that under the licensing conditions for the stations, they were required to prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment Report, “which prescribes that they provide public conveniences and waste bins in their locations”.

Oresanya added that petrol stations that do not meet the conditions would be sanctioned and might also be made to forfeit to government the land on which they were developed .

“I am sure that all the owners of the 250 petrol stations in Lagos are aware of these requirements because it is part of the pre-conditions for licensing a petrol station. The extent of the contravention is what most of them are ignorant of right now, but all those involved have now been given contravention notices and they have also been given time to abate or otherwise face sanctions,” he said.
