Serena 'Dumps' Tennis For Music

Tennis superstar, Serena Williams has stepped away from the court for a while, in a new bid to take her athleticism to a new hobby: rap.

Yes, you read that correctly. Though she’s best known as the former world number 1 women’s champion, Serena has reportedly been holed up in a Florida studio working on a hip-hop album, and over the weekend TMZ managed to get their hands on a minute-long teaser of Williams’ rap debut.

The most surprising part is that it doesn’t suck, well, it doesn’t suck that much.

Over a Missy Elliott-worthy beat, Serena delivers a series of rhymes, that, though cheesy are delivered with a confident flow that isn’t half-bad. She  serves up tennis metaphors and fashion brand name-dropping alike in this opening couplet, ”ball hard no tennis racquet/I can’t see these haters through my Gucci glasses.”

Her Grand Slam sibling also gets a mention, “I win, I really mean it/swag out this world you should call me Venus/that’s my sister, my name is Serena,” before talk of “frozen pizzas,” and crazy beats that “might blow your speakers.”

Her style even mimics Lil’ Wayne and Nicki Minaj’s “hashtag’ approach, a form where the spirit of a line is summarised with a single, final word. Serena spitting, “I ain’t ever been a loser/and I’m always on top, roofer.”

The preview was enough to impress Californian MC, The Game, who told TMZ that Serena was the real deal. Calling her a “really talented artist,” and attributing her “raw skills” to her Compton upbringing. “You shouldn’t expect her to come with anything less than the official rap bars,” he said, “I can see her doing big things.”

Though there’s no confirmation yet whether Serena will be making the rest of her rap music public, the ‘racquet’ she’s made and her ‘baller’ way with a ‘baseline,’ has already opened up a world of tennis-based puns for music writers the world over.
