Canoeing: ‘Akinyemi Can Win Medal For Nigeria’

A member of the Technical Committee of Nigeria Rowing, Sailing and Canoeing Federation, Abioye Olufemi has said that Nigeria’s only representative in the canoeing event of the London 2012 Olympic Games, England-based Jonathan Akinyemi has what it takes to win a medal for the country.

Olufemi disclosed in a chat with P.M.Sports at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos that with the talent in Akinyemi, Team Nigeria are sure of getting at least a medal in canoeing at the Games.

Olufemi, who is from the riverrine area of Ondo State, said that Akinyemi really exhibited the spirit of a champion during the qualifying series.

According to him: “Akinyemi can help Team Nigeria win a medal because right from the outset, he made up his mind to be at the Olympics and now that he is there, I can beat my chest to say that he can win a medal for us with God on his side.”

On the state of the sport in the country and the way forward, Olufemi hinted that the federation is working to make the sport more popular in the riverrine area, adding that they are working out the modalities to see how they can drive the sport forward, especially in a terrestrial country like Nigeria.
