Nigerian student jailed for knife attack

An Upper Area Court in the Nigerian central state of Plateau Friday sentenced an 18-year-old student, Yahaya Mohammed to three months imprisonment for stabbing his friend, Ibrahim Musa with a knife.

Mohammed, a student of Government Secondary School, Gangare, was sentenced for stabbing his victim in the stomach.

The court,sitting in Jos, however, gave the convict an option of N3, 000 fine.

The trial Judge, Malam Mustapha Hassan, said that the prosecution had convinced the court beyond reasonable doubt that the convict had committed the offence.

“The evidences tendered before the court by the prosecution had convinced the court that the convict was guilty of the offence.

“The three witnesses who testified before the court had proved that the convict committed the offence,’’ the judge ruled.

The prosecutor, Mr Ashiru Ibrahim, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 9, 2011 at about 11.00 p.m. at Gangare Area of Jos.

He said that the accused stabbed his friend on the stomach with a knife during a “minor disagreement’’.

Ibrahim told the court that the accused had committed an offence contrary to section 245 of the Penal Code.
