Chelsea of London’s midfielder, Nigerian John Mikel Obi is planning to give back to the society that made him by launching a Foundation in Lagos.
P.M.Sports gathered that the launching is scheduled for the Civic Centre in Lagos on Friday.
According to the UEFA Champions League winner, the aim of setting up a Foundation is his own way of giving back to the Nigerian society, and to bring succour to the homeless and displaced people in the country.
Mikel said: “I want to give back to the society, Nigeria made me and I have always longed to help the poor, especially the Alimajaris. I grew up in Jos and I have seen these people beg for food. I want them to share in my success and I think this is the right time to help out.
“While growing up, I saw these people come to beg for food. My mum used to call them over to give them food.
“All these have inspired me and I said I would help them if I achieve success in life; it is a goal I want to achieve. These people love football, which I know because I live very close to the stadium.”
The Super Eagles star further said: “The Foundation is not a short term project; it is a long term thing. I will set up a financial strategy to ensure the success of this project. Ex internationals that are in penury are also going to benefit from this project.”
