Head Coach of Union Bank Table Tennis Club, Samson Ajayi, has tipped Team Nigeria for glory at the coming London 2012 Olympic Games later in the year.
Ajayi, who is also a coach in the camp of Team Lagos preparing for the National Sports Festival, which the state will host later in the year, said that the country has experienced players that can win medals in the table tennis event of the London Games. “I have the conviction that Team Nigeria will shine at the London Olympics if we consider the calibre of players that we have in the camp. There are experienced players in that team who can compete at any level with players from any part of the world,” said Ajayi.
He said: “I believe our players know their onions in the sport. For instance, Haruna Quadri is a former African champion while Segun Toriola, a former Commowealth Games gold medalist and Funke Oshonaike have made their marks in the sport.”
The coach, however, appealed to the government and corporate bodies to support the sport by sponsoring tourneys in the country.
“Nigerian government and corporate bodies have a lot to do for the sport to take its rightful place at the international stage. They can help in funding regular competitions for the players to be in good shape,” Ajayi said.
