School Sports: 1,600 Pupils For 2nd LCM Cup

The second edition of Lagos Channel Management, LCM Soccer Cup organised by the Lagos Divisional Football Association, LDFA will attract at least 1,600 pupils from 16 primary schools in the five local governments that make up the division.

Chairman of the LDFA, Prince Ifalade Oyekan said the U-13 soccer tournament, tagged Goalz School Event, will hold at the Campos Stadium, Lagos Island on 1 October. He said the local governments, where the schools will come from include Lagos Island, Apapa, Eti Osa, Lagos Mainland and Surulere.

Prince Falade said part of the packages for the winners are the execution of valuable projects such as borehole and renovation works for infrastructural development of the winning school.

“This gesture would go a long way to generating healthy rivalry among schools in the division, and it would also encourage the schools to invest in sports with the intention of winning the tourney to enjoy similar projects,” Ifalade said.

He disclosed further that the LDFA is planning to bring former players like Teslim Fatusi, Bode Babinton, Wasiu Adetoro and Ibeh Johnson to speak to the pupils on the rudiments of the game, and the need for them to focus on their education while they still play football.

The chairman commended the sponsor, LCM, for its support to the association, adding that there is plan to give awards to outstanding players at the end of the competition. “We’ll give awards to the Best Goalkeeper, Most Valuable Player, MVP, Best Referee, Highest Goal Scorer and the Best Sports Journalist,” he said.

LCM Head of Operations, Captain Phil Glenton, who believes that the participating schools should focus on strategies to win the tourney, said the company, which has been in Nigeria for a couple of years, supported the LDFA’s quest to breed dynamic and skillful young footballers, who in the next 10 to 15 years, will be the face of Nigerian football.
