President, Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, Engr. Sani Ndanusa, has said that Nigerian players should expect stiff competition in this year’s Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, which serves off on Friday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Ndanusa, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, said that lack of adequate preparation, which had always been the bane of Nigerian players in the Governor’s Cup over the years, will also affect them this year.

He said: “Governor’s Cup this year will be keenly contested judging from the calibre and  number of players coming to Lagos to participate in the ITF-approved tournament.

“If our players prepare very well, I think they should be able to hold their heads high. It has always been difficult for them to go out to play circuits around the world and this has denied them the quality preparation needed to win the Governor’s Cup.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s number one female tennis player, Fatimah Abinu has remained coy over expectations from her as the clock ticks for the serve off day of the tourney, which is sponsored by FCMB Nig Plc. and Etisalat Nigeria.
