Gold medalist for Team Delta State in the shotput event of the ongoing National Sports Festival, NSF tagged ‘Eko 2012’, Eucharia Ogbukwo has advocated for proper funding of shotput in the country if the sport must be developed.
The graduate of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, who had a throw of 12.10m to win the medal, said the poor funding of the sport is the reason shotput has been relegated in the country.
The Anambra State-born athlete opined that there is no way the sport can develop in the country without proper funding stating “Shotput is on the decline because we have failed to fund the sport adequately, the administrators need to channel funds if the sport must develop in Nigeria”.
She attributed her gold medal feat to hard work and prayers saying “It is hard work and prayers that made me clinch the gold medal, I give the glory to God and I hope to do well in subsequent international competitions”.
