The Monthly Saturday Boxing Show was the highlight of the first quarter of the outgoing year as the organisers of the monthly event began to tilt in favour of secondary school students.

In a bid to discover young talents in the country, the organisers of the event featured secondary school students at the show held at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, Lagos.

Chairman of Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame, LBHF, Wale Edun said that the body aimed to use the event to discover young talents who will become stars in the near future.

“The aim of this monthly show is to discover young talents that are interested in boxing and nurture them to become world champions. These young boxers can become champions in the near future if they are properly groomed,” said Edun.

He added: “In the coming editions, we will feature school children who are aspiring to become famous and successful in the sport. We believe that the show will give them the opportunity to express themselves.”

On the international scene, Dereck Chisora vowed to become a world champion despite the British Boxing Board of Control’s decision to withdraw his licence.

The Londoner was involved in a number of controversial incidents before and after his WBC heavyweight title challenge against Vitali Klitschko at the Olympiahalle on 18 February.

He slapped Klitschko at the weigh-in and spat water at the Ukrainian’s brother Wladimir just prior to the contest, which he lost on points, before becoming embroiled in a brawl with David Haye at the post-fight press conference.

Chisora, already handed an indefinite ban and fine by the WBC, was called before the BBB of C in Cardiff and after a hearing, which lasted around for hours, it was confirmed that the 28-year-old’s licence had been withdrawn.

Chisora told The Sun: “I’m bitterly disappointed my lincence to box was taken away by the board. Right now I am an ex professional unable to earn a living. But I will be back in the gym even though I do not know when the board will grant me a new licence to box.”
