The government and the people of Kwara State are ready to play host to the maiden International Ultimate Super Slam Wrestling Festival tagged “Kwara 2013”.
The intercontinental wrestling fiesta, which is being organised to honour Governor Abdullfatah Ahmed is scheduled to hold from 16-22 June this year.
Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Hajia Ramat Adeshina Abaya said that all arrangements to host the tournament which will be organised by Nigeria (Pro) Wrestling Federation are being put in place, adding that a Local Organising Committee, LOC, headed by the Permanent Secretary of her ministry, Mrs. Rhoda Funmilayo Ajiboye has been set up with the mandate to organise a befitting tournament, the first of its kind in Kwara State.
“Our sports loving governor is in total support of the competition when he heard of it and we have been mobilising all necessary machineries to ensure that we host the world wrestlers in our state,” said Hajia Abaya.
Other members of the LOC include the initiator of the wrestling fiesta, who is also the president of Nigeria (Pro) Wrestling Federation, Prince Hammed Olanrewaju Mohammed, Director of Sports in the ministry, Alhaji Sanni Lukpan, Dirctor of Sports in the state’s sports council, Tunde Yinusa Kazeem, Chief Sports Officer, Mr. Bako, Mr. Bosun Awaye, Tunde Ogunbiyi and others.
The President of the federation, Mohammed, told News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Ilorin that the festival would hold at six tentative centres across the three senatorial districts in the state.
Mohammed, who is also the Vice President, Current World Wrestling Federation, added that some renowned international wrestlers from at least 20 countries of the world including Nigeria would be on ground for the festival to contest for five golden bets, which had since arrived Ilorin in the past few weeks. Some of the wrestlers are Chris Bambikiller from Austria, Big Daddy from the US and Banilux Bulldull.
The five events, he said, were Super Heavyweight, Heavyweight and Cruiserweight, Royal Rumble and Ladies bout.
According to him, the festival is to showcase the state to international wrestlers and also to showcase the state’s economy to the world.
He said this was with a view to attracting foreign investors to the state, adding that a documentary would be done immediately after the event.
Mohammed also disclosed that the federation will be giving award of “Good Governance and Peace Award,” to Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed.
“The award is for the governor’s good governance of the state and to showcase him as one of those that is doing what should be done in the country.
“No governor has succeeded in creating 2,000 jobs at once, but he has done it. This is among the things that had motivated us to bring the international event to the state,’’ he said.
According to him, a committee had earlier been set up to select the best performing governors for the award.
He added that the federation had earlier presented such awards to governors in Osun, Lagos, Rivers and Edo
