Ahead Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis: Etisalat Nigeria Charges Local Stars To Excel

As preparations for the 2013 edition of Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship gain momentum, Nigerian players that will take part in the tournament have been challenged to strive for excellence and do the nation proud.

This was the message by Etisalat Nigeria, one of the sponsors of the International Tennis Federation, ITF, sanctioned circuit, as the local players are getting ready for the 13th edition billed to serve off on 13 October at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.

Speaking in Lagos, Head of Sponsorship and Events at Etisalat Nigeria, Modupe Thani said: “In 2012, the players were great to watch and it was a delight to see Nigerian players played brilliantly against contestants from other countries. This year’s competition will hold in October and we are optimistic that Nigerian representatives will improve on their performance from last year.”

“At Etisalat Nigeria, we believe in the power of sports and for the fifth year running, we are proud to demonstrate our support for tennis in the country. We would not relent in supporting sports competitions that Nigerians are passionate about,” Thani said.

Last year, in the Men’s Singles, Spain’s Enrique Lopez-Perez defeated Egyptian Sherif Sabry to win the first leg and a prize money of $15,000, while Romania’s Cristina Dinu beat South African Chanel Simmonds to win the women’s singles a prize money of $25,000.

Spanish Lopez-Perez and Romanian Dinu were the hero of the second as they defeated Ruan Roelofse of South Africa and Conny Perrin of Switzerland to win the men and women’s singles final respectively.
