An FCT High Court in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Tuesday sentenced Joseph Morah, 52, to 10 years imprisonment for obtaining N35 million from Awalu Abdulrahman, a bureau de change operator, under false pretence.

Delivering judgment, Justice Abubakar Umar said the court considered that the convict was a first time offender and the court acknowledged that he was a family man with huge responsibilities.

“Having appreciated the fact that the convict is now a born again man, the sentence will start from 2010,” he said.

The judge said the prosecution, by evidence and testimonies of witnesses, had proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.

He said that the prosecution succeeded in linking the convict to the charge.

Umar said that the convict did not call any witness to testify on his behalf.

The convict was arraigned by the EFCC alongside John Obiamalu on a three-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining the amount under false pretence in November 2006.

Umar had since discharged and acquitted Obiamalu of the three count-charge.
