The ongoing Sterling Bank-sponsored National School Sports Festival has been described as another platform to harness the enormous talents abound in the country.
These were words of the President, Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), Ibrahim Muhammad at the opening ceremony of the one-week competition holding in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
Muhammad said the history of school sports is enriched with exploits of stars discovered from schools sports, who became international stars.
He stated further that the golden era of Nigeria sports was made possible with organised schools school sports which remains the nursery for the discovery and nurturing of budding talents.
“There’s no doubt that the ten days of this kiddies Olympics will afford the participants the opportunity to showcase their talents and also enjoy the hospitality of Kwara State. I wish to commend the commitment and dedication of the people and Government of Kwara State, especially Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, who has been showing unfailing support,” he said.
He said with 17 scoring and six demonstration sports in attendance in the 23 sports competition, new talents will be discovered for the future.
“We are confident that Olympic stars will be discovered for the future. When athletes are discovered at a tender age, there’s a tendency for then to grow in the said sports. This is what developed countries do, they discover, groom and develop athletes,” he said.
He said because physical development is part of education, it engenders determination, discipline and respect in the children. Muhammad however called on the Ministry of Education and that of Sports to collaborate and ensure that the average Nigerian child is properly developed to be able leaders of tomorrow.
