The ongoing Beach Copa Lagos 2013 entered its second day with a lot of excitement and fun as Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles continued their impressive showing with a win over last year runners-up, Lebanon 4-3 on penalties after both teams played 6 – 6 draw at the regulation time at the Eko Atlantic City beach on Victoria Island Saturday evening.

The match began with both teams matching each other tackles for tackles Lebanon, which in last year’s final gave the Sand Eagles a tough match, before the Nigerians eventually fought back to win the game 8-7, were full of determination from the blast of the whistle.

The presence of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State was a tonic for the Eagles as they raked up a 4-2 lead into the first period with Bartholomew Ibenegbu leading the charge wit a hat trick. But Hassam Fattal of Lebanon tie the game to 4-4 to the surprise of the Nigerians. Skipper Isiaka Olawale restored nomalcy in the second period as Nigeria scored two more goals to edge ahead before Lebanon clawed their way back to tie the game at 6-6.

Efforts by either of the side to get the winner proved abortive before the game was decided through penalty shootout despite the extra time.

Meanwhile, Senegal earlier in the day defeated Germany 5-2 in a tense and thrilling contest.

Both teams had yesterday lost their opening matches to Nigeria and Lebanon respectively.

Head coach of the Nigerian team, Audu Adamu was happy with the outcome of the match against the Lebanese. He expressed his joy for beating Lebanon the second time.

“We are happy to overcome Lebanon again. Last year they were our toughest opponents, it was very tough playing them again, but we have shown that we can match any team in the world. We are now looking forward to retaining the trophy on Sunday and make Nigerians proud once again,” he said.

Nigeria will take on Senegal, while Germany battle it out with Lebanon in Sunday’s matches.
The FCMB Plc. and Eko Atlantic sponsored tournament come to a close on Sunday.
