Cape Verde produced one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup so far after holding tournament favourites Spain to a dramatic 0-0 draw in their Group H opener on Monday.

Ranked 67th in the world and considered clear underdogs before kick-off, Cape Verde defied expectations with a disciplined defensive display that frustrated the European giants throughout the contest.

Spain dominated possession and created a host of scoring opportunities but were unable to find a way past Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, whose series of crucial saves ensured the African side secured a memorable point against one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.

The Spaniards finished the match with 24 attempts on goal compared to Cape Verde’s three, while also registering seven shots on target. However, despite their overwhelming dominance, Luis de la Fuente’s side lacked the cutting edge required to break down a determined Cape Verde defence.

Spain came closest to scoring in the first half when Ferran Torres rattled the crossbar from close range before Mikel Oyarzabal saw his follow-up effort brilliantly saved by Vozinha. The Cape Verde goalkeeper continued his heroics throughout the encounter, repeatedly denying Spain’s attacking stars.

As pressure mounted in the closing stages, Spain introduced teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in search of a breakthrough. The Barcelona winger injected urgency into the attack and created several late opportunities, but Cape Verde remained resolute.

The island nation nearly completed an even greater upset in stoppage time when Diney Borges rose highest from a corner kick, forcing Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón into a spectacular save to preserve the deadlock.

The result represents a significant boost to Cape Verde’s hopes of progressing from Group H and will be celebrated as one of the country’s finest achievements on the international stage.
