DPO clears illegal street traders off Lion Building area

The female Divisional Police officer, DPO, in charge of Lion Building Division, Lagos Island, western Nigeria, CSP Anthonia Tanaruno, has led her men to clear all the illegal markets, street trading and environmental nuisance within the vicinity of the Nigeria Police force Headquaters, Annex, Moloney, Lagos and its evirons.

The area had becom an eyesore in recent time due to the activities of the street traders who also impeded free flow of traffic in the area.

P.M.NEWS learnt that illegal street trading and environmental nuisance returned to the area shortly after the then AIG James Calcrick in-charge of Maritime Command, Police Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, was redeployed to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, Nigera.

A Police source informed P.M.NEWS that succour came the way of motorists passing through the area when the DPO who resumed duty recently discovered that illegal street trading and environmental nuisance had taken over the area.

The source said, following the ugly development, the DPO directed her men to restore sanity there and she stationed her men with a patrol Van there to sustain the enforcement.

The source further said since the DPO took the action there has been free flow of traffic in the area.

Following the new development, concerned residents of Obalende, Lagos and motorists have praised Tanaruno for doing what other police officers have not been able to do there.

They urged other police officers to emulate the DPO so as to move the society forward.

According to Mr. Augustine Okojie, a transporter, “the good job done by the DPO at the Force Headquarters environs has shown that what men can do, women could do it better. I am appealing to the DPO not to relent until sanity prevailed at the vicinity.”

When P.M.NEWS visited the area on Monday, there was sanity in the area as traffic was moving freely.

It was also observed that the Kai Brigade in the area led by Commander Fasasi have equally cleared all the street trading causing traffic gridlock around Obalende roundabout and its environs.

Efforts to see the DPO for comment was unsuccessful as she was said to have gone for a press briefing at the Lagos State Police Command Ikeja, Lagos.
