8 Convictions secured for suspected illicit drugs traffickers

The Edo Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has secured eight convictions for suspected illicit drugs traffickers in the first quarter of the year.

Mr Buba Wakawa, the State Commandant of the agency, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Monday.

Wakawa disclosed that out of the 57 suspects arrested within the period under review, nine were females and 48 males, while 16, 502 kilograms of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa was seized.

“In January, the Agency secured two convictions for suspects with 1, 725 kilo grammes of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa that was seized.

“About 13 kilogrammes of substance suspected to be Tramadol and 15 kilograms of substance suspected to be Codeine syrup were seized, while 14 suspects were arrested in connection with the crime.

“In February, 25 suspects with 6,656 kilogramme of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa was seized, while four convictions were secured.

” In March we secured two convictions, 18 suspects arrested and 8, 095 kilograms of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa were seized,’’ the commandant said.

He further disclosed that 32 persons underwent counseling within the period under review and had been re-united with their families.

He noted that the increase in seizures and arrest made was as a result of redoubled efforts by the organization to rid the state of illicit drugs and traffickers.
