The Lagos Water Corporation has charged residents of the State to support the ongoing metering exercise recently embarked upon by the Corporation to ensure accurate and efficient billing of customers, control water wastage and encourage water conservation.

This is contained in a statement released by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, CEO, Engr. Muminu Badmus on Tuesday in Lagos, in line with ongoing strategy to improve public water supply in the State.

The exercise has so far covered Lekki, Victoria Island, Victoria Island Annex, Surulere, Itire, Iwaya and Yaba/Ebute Metta, Magodo, Ikeja and MKO Abiola garden.

He, however, warned that the prepaid meters being installed in some properties are government-owned, not to be tampered with or vandalized, citing the recent harassment of the Corporation’s workers by residents of Dolphin Estate, where the staff were hindered from carrying out their lawful duties of installing meters on properties.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the law permits the Corporation to refuse supply of water to any particular premises that prevents meter installation,” he said, reiterating  that anyone caught in this act of illegal water connection and tampering with meters will face a minimum one-year imprisonment with a fine option of ₦100,000 or both, and a maximum one-year imprisonment with an option of ₦250,000 fine or both.

He urged members of the public to desist from this unlawful act and support the exercise to make the available water which is limited in quantity, get to other residents of the State.
