Man Jailed For Stealing N.2m Wine At Supermarket

A 41-year old man has been sentenced to one month imprisonment for stealing one bottle of Oxhenessy wine valued at N200,000 at a supermarket in Lekki area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

The convict, Lucky Enajero  was said to have stolen the wine at Prince Ebeano Supermarket, Oniru area of Maroko, Lekki, Lagos.

The convict was sentenced by Magistrate T.A Idowu of Court 17, Igbosere Magistrate Court,Lagos after the convict pleaded guilty to the one count charge of stealing punishable under section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 preferred against him by the Police at the Maroko Division, Lekki, and the facts of the matter presented before the Court by the Police Counsel, Friday Mameh.

Mameh had informed the court in charge No Q/19/2018 that the journey to jail started for the convict when he entered the Prince Ebeano Supermarket,Lekki, Lagos on 9 July, 2017 with the pretext of buying items and stole the wine and escaped.

Mameh told the Court that when the Management of Ebeano supermarket uncovered the theft after they audited their account books, they played out the CCTV Cameras mounted inside the supermarket and saw that the convict stole the wine and placed him on alert and reported the theft to the Police

He said that nemesis, however, caught up with the convict on 26 March, 2018 when he entered the supermarket again with intent to steal and he was apprehended by the security men on duty and handed over to the Police.

He said that during investigation, the convict confessed to the crime that joblessness and hunger pushed him to steal the wine.

.Mameh added that when the convict was asked why he did not steal food items instead of wine since he claimed that hunger pushed him to steal the wine, he could not give any reasonable answer.

Magistrate Idowu sentenced Enajero to one month imprisonment without an option of fine.
