Kogi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency ( KSPHCDA) says it is collaborating with the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the conduct of yellow fever reactive vaccination across the state.

Dr Abubakar Yakubu, Executive Director of the agency, who said this during his maiden press conference on Thursday in Lokoja, the collaboration also, involved other development partners.

The exercise, according to him, is aimed at preventing outbreak of the dreaded disease in the state in the next 40 years.

Reactive vaccination is an outbreak response tool for cholera and other infectious diseases.

He said the agency had scaled up the vaccination to cover all the 21 local government area in the state to ensure the success of the exercise.

Yakubu said the agency also held Maternal, Newborn and  Child Week and conducted Cerebrospinal Meningitis vaccination in parts of the state in November last year to boost primary healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

He said the agency, only last week, inaugurated 21 Routine Immunisation Officers (RIOs) as staff of Local Government Emergency Routine Immunization Coordinating Centre (LERICC).

The intervention, he said, would go a long way in improving immunisation coverage and check preventable child-killer diseases and prevent morbidity and mortality in the state.

The executive director commended the contributions of development partners such as WHO, UNICEF, AFENET, CHIP and MCSP in boosting health sector in the state.

He implored other partners to come to the aid of the state in the fight against childhood killer diseases, adding that government could not it alone.

“There is no state government that posses the resources to develop Primary Health Care alone, even in the most developed societies”, he pleaded.

The executive secretary said WHO was impressed and scored the state high on the success of the exercise.
