2 men arraigned over unlawful possession of firearms

The Police in Gombe on Thursday arraigned two men, Mu’azu Hudu, 35, and Saidu Ayuba, 50, in a Gombe Magistrate’s Court for allegedly possessing firearms unlawfully.

The accused men reside at Lafiya Lamurde community in Adamawa and at Gwanti Village in the Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State, respectively.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Habibu Danjuma, told court that the accused persons were on Oct. 23 at about 11.30 a.m. arrested and found possessing one locally made pistol.

He listed other items found with the duo to include six bows, six arrows, 11 knives, 11 cutlasses, two calabashes, one catapult and three bags, containing some items.

Danjuma said that when the men were questioned, they could not give satisfactory account of how they came by the exhibits.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 27 (1) (a) (i) of the Firearms Act, Cap. F 28, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The prosecutor further told the court that investigation into the matter was still in progress and applied for adjournment to enable police to complete their investigation.

The accused men, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Japhet Maida, granted them bail based on their applications and directed them to produce sureties, who must be resident in Gombe.

He adjourned the case until Nov. 11 for further mention.
