Rivers 2023: Ogoni people to declare stand on governorship

The people of oil producing Ogoni communities in Rivers will make their position known on the 2023 governorship in the State on Saturday 9, April.

This was revealed by Dr Deeka Fabeke Douglas, the President/ CEO of Ogoni Liberation Initiatives (OLI) in Bori, the Headquarters of Khana local government area which doubles as traditional headquarters of Ogoniland in Rivers on Sunday.

Dr Deeka Fabeke Douglas who spoke during during a prayer programme organised by the group therefore urged Ogoni people to form a common front in order to achieve the desired mandate in 2023.

He maintained that the ethnic nationality would not continue to be sidelined in the commonwealth of the state.

“We the Ogoni people on April 9, will declare our position on the 2023 governorship slot in Rivers State,’ Fabeke said

Fabeke said the aim of the prayer programme was to table before God the successes and challenges facing the people and also to bid seven members of the group who are going to study abroad farewell.

He also used the opportunity to call on members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to change their approach to solving the challenges facing the educational system in the country.

He expressed dissatisfaction with deteriorating situation in the educational system in the country.

According to him, the country’s education curriculum does not fit into the standard of today’s economic requirement and the reality of 21st century.

He added that strike is an old method outdated method of solving the problem facing our educational system at the tertiary level.

Fabeke lamented that the future of our youths desirous of University Education are being ruined by the incessant strikes by members of ASUU who are also parents.

“Universities are supposed to be a professional bodies that proffer solution to the problem facing our education system.

“ASUU continuous strike now contributes more to the existing problem to students who end up spending more years in school than the actual years meant for their course due to strike.

“It is time for government to look into the ASUU problem, proffer lasting solution and make education stress free like it is done in foreign countries.

“This is also why we are sending some youths to study abroad and this was born out of passion of what we saw our leader Ken Saro Wiwa do while when he was alive

“But this time we are making it a global entrepreneurs from Ogoni land,” Fabeke said.

Highlight of the event was the sending forth the first batch of Media Personnel going for international Media training. He urged them to be focused and ensure that they succeed in their studies.
