Police have given further details of Friday evening attack on a convoy of top management staff of West Africa Ceramics Company Ajaokuta, Kogi, indicating that one Indian expatriates was killed alongside two Inspectors, and two drivers by the ferocious gunmen.

The gunmen also succeeded in taking away two expatriate Indian from the company, Kogi Commissioner of Police Edward Egbuka said in a statement issued by the Command’s image maker SP William Ovye-Aya in Lokoja on Saturday.

“We just discovered that two expatriates of the West Africa Ceramics Company Ajaokuta were abducted by hoodlums that launched an attack on their convoy along Lokoja-Ajaokuta road.

The police in a statement said the attack took place at about 8pm.

According to the police, the inspectors died “in the exchange of fire with the hoodlums, before the Area Commander and a detachment of Military in the area reinforced to the scene of incident, and the attackers fled.

“While we condemn in strong term the dastardly act of the attackers, we are resolute to track them (hoodlums) down and rescue the expatriates unhurt.

“The police also wish to refute the insinuation that the hoodlums took away some AK-47 guns belonging to our officers during the attack,” he said.

“The CP assures that the Command is committed to working in synergy with other security agencies as well as patriotic stakeholders to make the State a safe and secure place for all and sundry.

“He has further tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to commence investigations into the unfortunate incident so as to unravel the remote and immediate cause of the attack with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.”

Egbuka appealed to the public to report any suspicious character or movement to the security agencies for necessary action.

He said that the bodies of the five victims had been deposited at the morgue of a facility in Ajaokuta Steel Complex.

In its reaction, the Kogi Government, in a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo said police and other security agencies already working to arrest the attackers.

Gunmen had last week killed three policemen and five vigilantes also in the Ajaokuta, while three children were also abducted in the area last some days ago.
