Carlo Ancelotti, the Italian coach of Real Madrid, will take over as head coach of Brazil’s national team for the Copa America in 2024, according to a source from the Brazilian Football Federation.

The federation had previously stated that Fluminense’s Fernando Diniz would take over as interim coach.

Ancelotti will take over Brazil in time for the Copa America, which will be staged in the United States in June 2024.

The former AC Milan and Chelsea manager will be the country’s first foreign coach in nearly sixty years.

Filpo Nunez, an Argentine, was the last foreign coach in Brazil, taking charge for one game in 1965.

Among his many achievements, Ancelotti, 64, has twice won the Champions League with AC Milan and Real Madrid.

He has also won domestic league titles with Chelsea in England, Bayern Munich in Germany, and PSG in France, as well as Real Madrid and Milan.

Tite coached Brazil at last year’s World Cup, but he stepped down after their quarterfinal defeat to Croatia.

Ramon Menezes has been acting as caretaker manager for the team.

The CBF had previously said that Diniz would lead the team for the upcoming season.

“Fernando Diniz will lead the Brazilian team for a year, and I’m sure he will do it with great competence, as always during his professional career,” said CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues in a video statement.

“It is a dream, an honour, and a huge pride to serve the national team,” Diniz said.

The 49-year-old will be in charge of six South American qualifying games for the 2026 World Cup, including matches against Argentina and Uruguay.

Brazil will begin their qualifying campaign in September, hosting Bolivia before travelling to Peru.
