The Lagos State Government on Wednesday charged public servants in the state to key into its digitalisation of the civil service for effective performance.

State’s Head of Service (HoS), Hakeem Muri-Okunola gave this charge at a public lecture titled: “Building and Sustaining a Digitalised Public Service,” in commemoration of this year’s Public Service Week held IN Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said government, over the last few years embraced digitalization, saying government was revolutionizing the way it delivered services, enhance efficiency, and create a more accessible and inclusive society.

“The lecture topic is not only apt but is the way to go if we are to resonate with the current realities the challenges of meeting the needs and yearnings of the populace has placed at our disposal as a workforce.

“In building a digitalized public service we must recognize the fact that technology has transform the way we interact with the populace and other stakeholders as government agencies and institutions,” he said.

Muri-Okunola added that from online platforms for applying for permits and licenses to digital portals for accessing information and resources, the potential for innovation is vast.

He said by implementing user-friendly interfaces, streamlining processes, and harnessing the power of automation, government could improve the overall experience for citizens.

The HoS stated that one of the key advantages of a digitalized public service is its ability to increase efficiency and productivity.

“Manual processes that are time-consuming and prone to human error can be replaced by automated systems, freeing up valuable resources that can be redirected towards more critical tasks.

“As you all know that by leveraging on data analytics, we can gain valuable insights that inform evidence-based decision-making and policy formulation. This enables us to allocate resources more effectively and optimize service delivery,” he said.

Muri-Okunola emphasised that a digitalized public service had the power to enhance accessibility and inclusivity, saying that technology had the ability to bridge geographical barriers, enabling citizens in remote areas to access services that were once out of reach.

“It also empowers individuals with disabilities by providing tools and platforms that cater to their unique needs. By ensuring that our digital infrastructure is built with accessibility in mind, we can create a society that leaves no one behind.

“However, building a digitalized public service is just the beginning; sustaining it is equally important.

“As a government we are building infrastructure, both in terms of hardware and software, to support the digital transformation. This includes providing reliable internet connectivity, developing secure platforms, and continuously upgrading our systems to keep up with technological advancements.

“Equally important is the need to foster a culture of digital literacy and empowerment. This government is equally ensuring that citizens and public servants alike are equipped with the necessary skills to navigate and utilize digital tools effectively. Thus resources are being invested in training programs and awareness campaigns to bridge the digital divide and build a digitally competent society,” he said.

The HoS further said sustaining a digitalized public service necessitated a proactive approach to cybersecurity, saying that a government relied more on technology, “we must be vigilant in safeguarding sensitive data and protecting against cyber threats.

“Robust cybersecurity measures, such as encryption, regular audits, and employee training, are crucial to maintain public trust and confidence in our digital systems.”

Muri-Okunola emphasised that building and sustaining a digitalized public service was an imperative task for the modern era, saying that as the State and the Public Service had long ago embrace technology “and we are transforming the way we deliver services, increase efficiency, and create a more inclusive society.

“However, this transformation requires long-term commitment and investment in infrastructure, digital literacy, and cybersecurity. Let us work together to seize the opportunities provided by the digital age and build a public service that truly serves the needs of all citizens.”
