Police disperse NURTW factions

There was tension in Abuja on Tuesday as two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) clashed at the national secretariat of the union.

The NURTW has been enmeshed in leadership crisis for some time.

The situation took a new dimension today when a group loyal to Tajudeen Baruwa from neighbouring states staged a protest with a view to dislodge the rival group but were prevented by the armed security operatives stationed at the premises of the secretariat.

Road users and passersby scampered for safety as policemen fired gunshots and teargas to disperse the irate mob.

According to reports, several members and people in neighbouring plazas and houses ran for safety as many are said to have sustained gunshot wounds.

It was gathered that the clash might not be unconnected with disagreements in the composition of the leadership as the current president was not the choice candidate of his predecessor.

Unconfirmed source said one person was killed during the clash.
