Alleged collection of illegal tolls in Mushin lands Omosanya in prison

The Police at the Mushin Division of the Lagos State Police Command, Olosan, Mushin, Lagos, Southwest, Nigeria have arrested a suspected Mushin-based tout, Segun Omosanya, 20 and charged him before a Lagos Magistrate’s court for allegedly collecting illegal tolls from motorists at Ojuwoye junction, along the Agege Motor road, Mushin with others still at large.

Police alleged that in order to avoid causing a breach of the peace with the defendant in the area, concerned Union members in the area sent a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Mushin Division, Olosan, SP Garuba Oseni who swiftly dispatched his men led by Inspector Ojo Idowu to the scene to arrest the suspects and restore order.

The police succeeded in arresting the defendant while others managed to escape.

Omosanya was charged before the Mushin Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, conduct likely to cause breach of the peace, threatening, violence and terrorizing the community.

Police prosecuting counsel, Inspector Ogundeji informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on 19 July, 2023 at Ojuwoye junction, Mushin.

Ogundeji told the court that the defendant was arrested and charged to court for allegedly forcefully collecting tolls from Motorists along the busy Ojuwoye junction, Mushin with others still at large without authority.

Ogundeji further told the court that the defendant also threatened violence and terrorized the community during the tolls collection.

He said the offences, the defendant committed were punishable under Section 411, 168(1) and 56(A) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded guilty to counts one and two and pleaded not guilty to count three of the charges.

The presiding Magistrate R, S. Abdulsalam granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Magistrate Abdulsalam adjourned the case till 12 September 2023 for mention and ordered that the defendant be detained at the Federal Correctional Facility in Lagos till he perfected the bail conditions.
