The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) organised a one-day symposium titled “Trauma to Triumph” in observance of Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness (DSVA) Month.
The event, which was held at the Providence Hotel in Ikeja, had more than 70 survivors in attendance. It aimed to shine a spotlight on survivors of domestic and sexual violence, offering them a platform for empowerment, encouragement, and celebration.
The symposium’s theme, “Trauma to Triumph,” was carefully selected to inspire survivors by emphasising that life can continue after traumatic experiences. Vivour-Adeniyi praised the resilience and determination of survivors, affectionately referring to them as “SHEROES.”
The agenda was thoughtfully curated to ensure that survivors felt celebrated and were further empowered to navigate life successfully beyond their traumatic experiences.
In her welcome address, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of DSVA, highlighted recent statistics that underscore the prevalence of domestic and sexual violence perpetrated against women by men.
These statistics align with global data, emphasising male perpetration and female victimisation in such cases.
Vivour-Adeniyi also emphasised the collective responsibility of society in challenging the factors that enable sexual and gender-based violence. She urged attendees to be aware of available channels for reporting such cases, including the DSVA toll-free line and other support systems.
The symposium featured a panel of inspirational speakers from various sectors who shared their insights on overcoming trauma and achieving triumph.
Among them, Mrs. Adetutu Oluremi Ososanya shared her personal journey to triumph; actress Kate Henshaw exemplified unwavering resilience; Tosin Olaseinde shed light on financial prowess; Ms. Ola Philips highlighted the importance of a strong support network; Ms. Titilola Adedeji explored business opportunities; and Dr. Yolanda George-David discussed the path from trauma to triumph.
The event also included special moments like the cutting of a celebratory cake and opportunities for survivors to receive beauty makeovers and professional photography sessions.
Additionally, attendees had access to free clinical psychosocial support, therapy sessions, and legal advice provided by the Lagos Public Interest Law Partnership (LPILP).
