Breaking: Senate suspends Ningi over N3.7trn budget padding allegation

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday suspended Senator Abdul Ningi over allegation that the Red Chamber padded the 2024 budget by N3.7 trillion.

The lawmakers suspended Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central, for three months.

Ningi, who is the Chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum had told the BBC Hausa Services in an interview that the Federal Government is operating two budgets and that the Senate passed N25 trillion as 2024 budget and not the N28 trillion the President Bola Tinubu administration was currently implementing.

He alleged that the 2024 budget was padded with N3.7 trillion.

Senator Olamilekan Adeola had on Tuesday called on the lawmakers to address the allegations raised by the Senator, describing them as false.

During the session, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim moved a motion for the suspension of Ningi for 12 months.

He also said Senator Sumaila Kawu should be cautioned.

Senator Sani Musa suggested that Ningi should be suspended for three months and should be also made to write an apology letter to the Senate.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio after the various contributions said “Senator Ningi is hereby suspended for three months and disconnected from all activities of the Senate for the three months.”
