The Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela, has downplayed monogamy, saying it “doesn’t work”.
Grammy-nominated Afrobeat singer encouraged men to embrace polygamy, stressing that every man should have multiple women.
Speaking on the ‘Bahd & Boujee’ podcast, Seun claimed that having multiple women demonstrates power and affluence.
He said, “Monogamy doesn’t work. As a powerful man, you must have the support of numerous powerful goddesses. You know, women that are in your life because the ancestors want to put them there. You share with them.”
He added that his late father and Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, had over 100 concubines despite marrying 27 women in one day.
Seun also revealed that his late father, Fela Kuti, had over 100 concubines who were living in his house, but people only knew of Fela’s 27 wives.
“People only know of Fela’s 27 wives, they don’t know of his over 100 girlfriends that lived with us in the house,” he remarked.
Seun Kuti said his late father, Fela, married 27 women on the same day in a bid to preserve their honour and dignity as the media was already tagging his female dancers and band members living with him as “prostitutes”.
Fela got married to 27 women in one day back in 1978 in what was seen as a very daring move.
Seun Kuti is publicly known to be married to one woman; his wife, Yetunde Kuti.
