The Delta State Police Command has neutralized three suspected kidnappers and armed robbers in Agbarho Community, Ughelli North Local Government Area, recovering four AK-47 rifles in the process.

Spokesperson for the command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development to reporters in Warri on Sunday.

]He stated that the operation, which occurred on Thursday, was led by CSP Iwok Ndifereke, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ebrumede Division.

According to Edafe, the suspects were linked to the murder of two mobile policemen and a driver during a failed kidnapping attempt on Sept. 2 at Okoloba Junction, Uvwie Local Government Area.

“In response to the incident, Commissioner of Police (CP) Olufemi Abaniwonda ordered heightened security measures around Warri and neighboring areas,” Edafe explained.

He detailed the operation that led to the neutralization of the suspects. “Following the botched kidnapping of a Delta State House of Assembly member’s wife on Sept. 2, where two mobile policemen and the driver, Mr. David Imela, were killed, the CP directed an immediate crackdown on the criminals. Acting on this, CSP Ndifereke deployed officers strategically, creating an artificial traffic hold-up at the DSC roundabout.”

Upon encountering the police checkpoint, the suspects opened fire but quickly fled, abandoning their vehicle—bearing registration number WWR-436-GZ—when police returned fire. Three AK-47 rifles were recovered from the vehicle.

“Unsatisfied with the initial operation, the CP ordered officers to track down the fleeing suspects. Using intelligence gathered from items recovered from their vehicle, operatives stormed their hideout in Agbarho on Oct. 3,” Edafe added.

In a gun battle that ensued, police engaged the suspects, leaving three with serious gunshot wounds. They were taken to the hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival. Another AK-47 rifle was recovered during the raid.

The police command has intensified efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the gang, Edafe concluded.
