President Bola Tinubu has said that the most fitting tribute to champions of democracy like the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu is to uphold credible, transparent, and democratic elections that embody the people’s right to choose their leaders.
In a statement on Friday, Tinubu mourned the former National Electoral Commission (NEC) chairman, remembering Nwosu as a bold and courageous administrator.
He extended condolences to Nwosu’s family, friends, and associates following the former NEC chairman’s passing in a U.S. hospital on 24 October.
Prof. Nwosu served as NEC chairman from 1989 to 1993, overseeing the landmark June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was annulled by then-General Ibrahim Babangida.
Prior to this election, Nwosu’s NEC introduced the innovative Option A-4 voting method, which allowed voters to queue behind their chosen candidate’s photograph, a straightforward approach that left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s electoral process.
Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of what he called a “patriot and national asset,” highlighting Nwosu’s role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The President prayed for eternal peace for the departed political scientist and divine comfort for those who mourn him.
