Nigerian music star Rema has clarified that his self-confidence should not be mistaken for arrogance after ranking himself among Afrobeats’ greatest artistes.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the Calm Down crooner addressed his previous statement about Nigeria’s top four musicians, which included himself.
The 24-year-old singer stressed that his belief in his greatness stems from his hard work and dedication, questioning why it’s controversial for him to acknowledge his own success.
“So on ‘Heis’, I was talking a lot of s**t. It is not cocky. It is like what stops you from saying you’re the best? You can say it and stand your ground. It is even humble to say four,” he said.
Rema also referenced rapper Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, explaining that unlike Lamar’s “It’s just big me” statement, he is not tearing others down but advocating for Afrobeats’ unity.
“I didn’t pull down the two, I didn’t pull down the three. I just see myself as one of the greats, and it’s a problem. I’m not saying ‘oh f**k everybody.’ I really vouch for the unity of Afrobeats.”
