Nigerian singer Shallipopi has criticized the organisers of the prestigious Afrobeats award show, The Headies, following an embarrassing incident at its 17th edition held in Lagos on Sunday.
The ‘Cast’ crooner vowed never to attend the award ceremony again after experiencing what he described as a humiliating moment.
Shallipopi, who lost the highly anticipated Next Rated category to his frequent collaborator, Odumodublvck, thought he had secured a consolation when his song ‘Cast’ was announced as the winner of Best Rap Single of the Year.
However, the celebration was short-lived. Upon reaching the stage to receive his award, the presenter merely offered him a handshake as the organisers had reportedly run out of award plaques midway through the event.
Reacting to the incident on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Monday, Shallipopi expressed his displeasure, declaring that he would henceforth boycott the ceremony. He also noted that he did not even desire the Best Rap Single award, stressing that he does not consider himself a rapper and called for the plaque to be given to a “real rapper” instead.
He wrote, “The next one if una see me make I bend. I nor go even lie for una sef, I nor want that award. Give the real rappers wey dey the category. Me, Shallipopi I nor be rapper.”
