Nigerian Fuji legend, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, has stirred controversy online following a viral video that captured a seemingly tense encounter between him and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.
The clip, which has been widely shared on social media, shows the monarch approaching KWAM1 for a greeting during a recent event.
However, the singer’s response, marked by a brief nod and lack of a customary bow, was seen by many as disrespectful to the highly revered Yoruba traditional ruler.
The backlash was immediate. Netizens criticized KWAM1’s demeanor, with many insisting that tradition demands a sign of deep respect, such as prostration or bowing, when greeting a king of the Ooni’s stature.
The viral video was captioned with the question: “Why did K1 De Ultimate fail to bow down for Ooni of Ife while exchanging pleasantry? This is highly disrespectful.”
Social media users weighed in heavily:
-
@ola_billz1 said: “No matter how close you are to someone before he ascends the throne, as a good Yoruba person, you must show that person respect.”
-
@soberdrunk88 called it “a very big abomination,” noting that even former President Obasanjo bows before the Ooni.
-
@idrisabdulkareem11 offered a different perspective, defending the singer: “K1 is the Mayegun of Yorubaland. Holding such a title, it’s a taboo to bow or prostrate for any king again.”
