Former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has said that all Nigerians should undergo military training to build discipline and unity in the country. He suggested that this should start with those in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Ihejirika spoke on Friday night during the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian Defence Academy Regular Course 18 Alumni Association in Abuja. He shared memories of his military training days and how it built strong friendships among officers.

He said, “Looking at how things are in Nigeria today, I think it’s time we make military training compulsory for everyone, starting with NYSC. It will teach young people sacrifice, responsibility, and love for the country.”

Ihejirika also praised the government for bringing back the old national anthem, saying it promotes unity. He explained that the line “Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand” shows what national service should be about.

He expressed worry that the national anthem is now treated like mere entertainment at events. He said it should be a daily reminder of our loyalty to Nigeria and should be sung in schools and communities regularly.

Ihejirika spoke about his humble beginnings in Abia State and how military discipline changed his life. He thanked his colleagues and mentors for helping him rise to become Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Army Staff.

He also praised the current leaders of the Nigerian military, saying they are experienced because they have fought in places like Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Ihejirika urged leaders in Nigeria to focus on peace and unity, saying that no leader can remain in power if there is no peace in the country.

The event was attended by top defence officials, including the Minister of State for Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff.
