Beware! NAFDAC flags popular infant milk formula

Quick Read

According to NAFDAC, physical inspection of the formula revealed signs of tampering, with the top preprinted sticker displaying manufacturing and expiry dates inconsistent with the original markings. The agency said this confirmed suspicion of revalidation—a serious violation of regulatory standards.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning following the discovery of a suspected revalidated SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula (900g) on sale in Kaduna State.

The product is reported to have caused gastrointestinal distress in a four-month-old infant.

According to NAFDAC, physical inspection of the formula revealed signs of tampering, with the top preprinted sticker displaying manufacturing and expiry dates inconsistent with the original markings. The agency said this confirmed suspicion of revalidation—a serious violation of regulatory standards.

SMA Gold Infant Formula, produced by Nestlé, is designed to provide complete nutrition for infants from birth to six months. NAFDAC stressed that altering the product’s shelf life without approval poses major public health risks.

Health Risks Highlighted by NAFDAC Include:

Product Adulteration: Altered date markings misrepresent product quality.

Consumer Deception: Misleading information about freshness and nutritional integrity.

Public Health Threat: Expired formula may carry microbial contamination and reduced nutrients, endangering infants’ health.

The agency noted that infants consuming compromised formula may face acute gastroenteritis, dehydration, malnutrition, secondary infections, or, in severe cases, fatal outcomes.
