A 30-year-old Nigerian fashion designer living in the United States, Sheriff Shittu, has been shot dead after an argument with a drunk customer at a nightclub in Brooklyn, New York.
The tragic incident happened in the early hours of February 14 at Quilox Restaurant and Lounge in the East Flatbush area. According to reports, the shooting occurred around 4:25 a.m.
Police said the suspected gunman was being escorted out of the club by security after causing trouble inside. While being taken out, he allegedly pulled out a gun and started shooting.
Witnesses said the man had been behaving badly and had allegedly touched some female guests inappropriately, including Shittu’s girlfriend. This led to a heated argument.
Sheriff Shittu had gone to the club with his younger brother, Fawaz Shittu, to celebrate a friend’s birthday.
Fawaz said he was shocked and heartbroken. “I was screaming his name. I was trying to wake him up,” he told reporters.
Another family member, Salem Shittu, questioned how the suspect was able to bring a gun into the club. He said security should have properly searched guests before allowing them inside.
Police said the suspect ran away after the shooting and is still on the run.
Shittu was taken to One Brooklyn Health–Brookdale University Hospital Medical Centre, where doctors later confirmed his death.
