With players like Onyeka expected to remain part of the project, the Sky Blues will now turn their attention to strengthening the squad ahead of what promises to be a challenging campaign in the top division.
Nigeria international Frank Onyeka is on the verge of sealing a permanent transfer to Coventry City following the club’s successful promotion to the Premier League.
Coventry confirmed their return to England’s top-flight after battling to a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, a result that proved enough to secure their place among the elite clubs for next season.
Onyeka, who joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brentford in January, had a conditional agreement tied to the move, which stipulated that the deal would be made permanent if the club achieved promotion.
With that target now accomplished, Coventry are expected to activate the clause and retain the midfielder on a long-term basis.
Since his arrival, the 28-year-old has played a key supporting role in the team’s resurgence, bringing energy, tactical discipline, and valuable Premier League experience to the squad.
His presence in midfield added depth and stability during a crucial phase of the season, as Coventry pushed for promotion.
Although Onyeka has made 11 league appearances so far, his contributions have gone beyond numbers, with his work rate and defensive abilities earning praise from the coaching staff and supporters alike. His experience at the highest level of English football is also seen as a major asset as the club prepares for life in the Premier League.
Prior to his move, Onyeka found game time limited at Brentford, which prompted his temporary switch in search of regular football.
Last season, he also spent time on loan at German Bundesliga side FC Augsburg, where he gained further European experience.
Coventry’s promotion marks a historic achievement for the club, ending a 25-year absence from the Premier League.
