A young Nigerian champion of the Summit of the Future, a United Nations Interagency Representative, James Popoola, has taken the global stage at the United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum 2026, delivering a powerful message on youth innovation and sustainable development.
The 2026 ECOSOC Youth Forum, themed “Innovate, Unite and Transform: Youth Shaping the Road to 2030”, took place from 14 to 16 April 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, with a Youth Blast held on 13 April. The forum brought together young leaders from around the world to engage directly with Member States and contribute to critical UN processes, including the 2026 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), the SDG Summit 2027, the implementation of the Pact for the Future, and outcomes from the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD-4).
In his submission during the African Regional session, James addressed the need to focus on tailored solution to Africans emerging challenges. We have the biggest opportunity at our disposal in Africa; being the youngest continent, we cannot afford to misuse our unfair advantage.
He also highlighted the urgent need for bold youth-led solutions in addressing global challenges. He emphasized the importance of innovation in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those under review at the 2026 HLPF: SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Speaking on the theme “Innovate, Unite and Transform,” he called on young people to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete actions that drive real impact. “We are not just the leaders of tomorrow, we are the architects of today’s solutions,” he told delegates. “Through innovation, unity, and transformation, African youth, especially from Nigeria, are ready to partner with the world to build resilient communities and sustainable futures.”
The forum featured dynamic plenary sessions and regional breakout discussions, providing a platform for youth voices to influence policy and commitments toward the 2030 Agenda. Participants explored actionable strategies to accelerate progress on the 17 SDGs, with strong emphasis on multi-stakeholder partnerships and youth inclusion in decision-making processes.
The ECOSOC Youth Forum continues to serve as a vital space for young people to shape global dialogue on issues affecting humanity, reinforcing the critical role of youth in driving the road to 2030 and beyond.
ECOSOC Forum unites youth across the globe to shape Road to 2030. I look forward to taking action on the issues and challenges discussed during the forum.
