Three teams, one city as Lagos ignites NPFL buzz ahead of new season

Lagos football is set for a fresh surge of excitement as the 2026/2027 NPFL season approaches, with three city-based clubs preparing to light up the top flight and revive a long-dormant derby culture in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

For supporters in the state, this moment feels like a return to an old rhythm.

The buzz around domestic league football in Lagos is gradually rebuilding, with anticipation growing around matches that will once again bring thousands of fans together across the city.

This resurgence also carries strong echoes of the past. Decades ago, Lagos was a powerhouse of Nigerian club football, hosting a vibrant mix of teams whose matches routinely drew massive crowds and intense local pride.

Clubs such as Stationery Stores, First Bank, Union Bank, NEPA, NPA, Police Machine, and several others once defined the city’s football identity. Their weekly fixtures were major social events, with stadiums packed and communities deeply invested in the outcomes.

That golden atmosphere eventually faded as many of those teams disappeared or slipped into lower divisions.

Now, however, a new wave of privately driven clubs is beginning to restore that lost energy, setting the stage for a modern revival of Lagos football rivalries in the NPFL era.
