“I didn’t like the name Jamila because I feared it might tarnish my name, so I asked for it to be changed, and the director agreed,” she said.

Veteran Kannywood actress, Wasila Isma’il, has died at the age of 46 following a prolonged illness.

Her former husband, Al-Amin Chiroma, confirmed her death on Sunday in a social media post, stating that she passed away at FOMWAN Hospital in Kaduna.

Born in Kaduna, Wasila was one of the well-known faces in the Hausa film industry, gaining prominence after starring in the 1999 film Wasila, directed by Yakubu Lere alongside veteran actor Ali Nuhu.

She began her acting career in 1998 with the film Jinin Masoya and went on to build a respected profile within Kannywood over the years.

In an earlier interview, the late actress explained her decision to change the film title from Jamila to Wasila, saying she was uncomfortable with the original name.

“I didn’t like the name Jamila because I feared it might tarnish my name, so I asked for it to be changed, and the director agreed,” she said.

Following the news of her passing, fans and colleagues have taken to social media to express grief, celebrating her contributions to the growth of the Kannywood industry and praying for her soul.
