Sunderland defeated Chelsea to qualify for European football for the first time in 53 years.

The win helped Sunderland finish seventh in the Premier League and secure a place in the Europa League. They became only the fifth club to qualify for Europe through league position one season after gaining promotion.

Chelsea ended the season in 10th place and missed out on European qualification. It was also the final game in charge for interim coach Calum McFarlane.

Sunderland took the lead in the first half through Trai Hume, whose first-time volley surprised Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

In the second half, Chelsea defender Malo Gusto accidentally scored an own goal after trying to stop Brian Brobbey’s effort. Cole Palmer later pulled one back for Chelsea with a long-range strike, but Sunderland held on for victory.

Chelsea’s problems increased when Wesley Fofana received two quick yellow cards and was sent off. It was Chelsea’s eighth red card in the league this season — the highest in the club’s Premier League campaign.

Sunderland created more chances and deserved the win. Brobbey and substitute Habib Diarra also came close to scoring again.

The victory moved Sunderland above Chelsea, Brighton and Brentford in the final standings and earned them a place in next season’s Europa League.
